Midland Care Announces Total Raised and Top Fundraisers from 2016 Celebration Walk

Topeka, KS – June 23, 2016 – Local, not-for-profit, health care provider Midland Care raised $ 94,507.70 at the 2016 Celebration Walk, Midland Care CEO Karren Weichert announced today. The Celebration Walk is an annual fundraiser held one evening each year to honor loved ones who have died. The 20th annual event was held on Friday, May 13, 2016.

Over 1,500 people attended this year’s Celebration Walk, despite record cold temperatures. Attendees enjoyed family activities, live music and a butterfly release. Over 2,000 luminaries were lit at dusk across Midland Care’s 22-acre campus, 1,454 of which were purchased in honor of loved ones. Many families stayed for the powerful closing ceremony, during which 770 names of people who have passed away were read from the stage. Nearly 200 event volunteers worked during the event.

Midland Care staff and volunteers compete as teams and individuals in the months leading up to the Celebration Walk to raise funds. Together, Midland Care fundraising teams raised $19,460.34. The winning team, The FunRaisers, captained by Midland Care Hospice Home Care RN Jodi Holzmeister, raised $7,691.02. The winning individual fundraiser, Midland Care PACE LPN Angela Anderson, raised $2,249.75.

Other proceeds from the event came from corporate sponsors, including KBS Constructors, Bartlett & West, Penwell-Gabel Funeral Homes, Stormont Vail Health, Hill's Pet Nutrition, UMB Bank, Wise Hospice Options and 27 other generous businesses.

“The Celebration Walk has been a Topeka tradition for 20 years, it serves as a community memorial service and a valuable source of financial support for Midland Care,” explained Weichert, “the average cost of charity care for a patient last year was $3,205, so these funds will go a long way towards helping us offer hospice care and bereavement services to anyone who needs them, regardless of ability to pay.”

Next year’s Celebration Walk is scheduled for the evening of Friday, May 12, 2017.
