FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Meals on Wheels of Eastern Kansas Opens Congregate Meal Sites and Seeks Volunteers in Douglas County
October 7, 2019 (Topeka, Kan.) – Meals on Wheels of Eastern Kansas began delivering meals to seniors in Douglas County in October of 2018. As of October 1, 2019 Meals on Wheels of Eastern Kansas has opened four congregate meals sites and is seeking new volunteers to help deliver meals in Douglas County.

“Volunteers are the heart of our organization. Right now, we have a large need for volunteers in Douglas County,” said Heidi Pickerell, President and CEO of Meals on Wheels of Eastern Kansas.

Over 1,000 meals and safety checks are provided daily to seniors and homebound members of the communities in Douglas, Shawnee and Jefferson counties, with the help of volunteers. Delivering for Meals on Wheels is very flexible. Volunteers can choose to deliver once a month to a weekly basis and most routes take less than an hour to deliver.

The new congregate meal sites allow for seniors to gather for their meal and social activity. The new sites are located at:
• Midland Care PACE Site, 319 Perry Street, Lawrence
• Babcock Place, 1700 Massachusetts Street, Lawrence
• Eudora Recreation Center, 1630 Elm Street, Eudora
• Baldwin Healthcare & Rehab Center, 1223 Orchard Ln, Baldwin City

The nation’s senior population is growing exponentially. A recent fact sheet provided by Meals on Wheels of America shows that 6.9 million seniors live in poverty with an income of $228 a week or less to cover all of their expenses including housing, utilities, and medical, leaving very little for food.

Jayhawk Area Agency on Aging supports Meals on Wheels by providing partial funding through the Older Americans Act to help ensure seniors and homebound in Douglas, Shawnee and Jefferson counties receive the support they need.
“We know seniors living at or below poverty are nearly twice as likely to be unable to live independently,” said Pickerell. “Programs like Meals on Wheels help seniors continue to live at home and remain healthy and independent.”
