TOPEKA, Kansas (July 8, 2020)— As many acute care hospitals evaluate their service offerings, some have determined that independent home health agencies would be better suited to provide these services to patients after a hospital stay. There are 17 non-hospital home health providers in Shawnee County.
On July 15, 2020 the home health agency operated by The University of Kansas Health System St. Francis Campus will begin transitioning patients from their care to Midland Care Connection, Inc. (Midland) or another home health agency of the patient’s choosing. Midland, a not-for-profit, community based organization, and St. Francis Campus have a long history of collaboration.
When Midland Care began in 1978, the small non-profit was a fully volunteer-based organization in need of health care partners. A partnership with the county health department and later St. Francis Home Health was formed. In the late 1990s, St. Francis embraced the work of Midland Care and became the organization’s first hospital provider for hospice, which allowed the organization to become Medicare certified. Midland Care has been closely tied to the St. Francis Campus through the decades of support they have provided.
“Our goal is to make this transition as seamless as possible for our current home health patients. Midland will be hiring almost all of our home health staff, which should minimize any disruption in the relationships these caregivers have developed with their patients,” explained St. Francis Campus CEO Steve Anderson.
Karren Weichert, President/CEO of Midland Care Connection, Inc. stated, “Today, we have an opportunity to build on something that both organizations have been committed to in Topeka and the surrounding area for over 40 years by touching more lives through excellence in healthcare and service. With this collaboration, we will be able to meet even more of those needs than we could separately.”
