Grief Buddies Needed for Healing Hearts Grief Camp

Grief Buddies Needed for Healing Hearts Grief Camp

Categories: Blog, children's grief, grief and loss

Each fall Midland Care hosts a children’s grief camp for children ages 6 – 12 who are grieving the death of a loved one.  It takes a village of staff and volunteers to prepare and run the grief camp.  Over 30 volunteers attend camp to make sure everything runs smoothly.

One of the most important volunteer roles is a Grief Buddy.  A Buddy is an adult who attends the camp for the whole weekend and is “buddied” with 2 children to shepherd and mentor throughout the camp.  A Buddy spends the weekend with the children, doing the same activities and providing emotional support to their assigned kids.

Volunteers describe the weekend as the best weekend of the year!  They feel they really get to know the children they were assigned and feel they make a positive impact on their grief journey.  Volunteers also describe it as one of the hardest weekends of the year.  At times it is hard to be present with children who are actively grieving and in emotional pain and the volunteers are really tired when they get home, but say it is an amazing kind of tired.

Do you want to make a difference in the lives of grieving children? Midland Care is still in need of a few Buddies for Healing Hearts Grief Camp. Please call 785-232-2044 ext. 1088 and talk to Stephanie Broxterman for details and to get a volunteer application. Click here for more information about Healing Hearts Camp and the Buddy role.
