In August 2011, Jeff lost his father, Ward Whelan, to an eight-year battle with cancer. More recently, Karli Ritter lost her grandfather, Ken Chandler, to a three-year battle with cancer in July 2013. Looking to give back to the community both decided on starting a 5K run/walk to benefit the local hospice charities that helped their families.
“Our mission is to raise awareness and support for Hospice and Palliative Care, specifically benefiting those at Kansas City Hospice & Palliative Care and Midland Care Hospice of Topeka and Lawrence.”
Both the Whelan and Ritter families had their loved one’s go through hospice care and realized these organizations do not get the recognition they deserve! Having the ability to provide the most beloved care while giving peace of mind to grieving families is a well-deserved quality.
“We all have been touched by someone in our lives who has been through hospice care. KC Hospice and Topeka Midland Care provide the most outstanding care during our hardest times and we could not think of two better organizations to be our charitable partners for this race!”
This family friendly race will take place in Overland Park, Kansas on Saturday, June 12, 2021. Bring your friends and family out to support an amazing cause. Runners, walkers and stroller/wagon riders are all welcome join! There will be awards given to the top three overall male/female and overall male/female masters runners following the race along with age group medals.
